Right stroke. Left stroke. Right stroke. Left stroke. Coasting time. You gaze in awe at the majesty of the surrounding forest and mountains. Look! An elk darts across the beach back into the forest. Such is what you can experience when you have a kayak. Fortunately for you though, I have a good one you should seriously consider. Without further ado, I give you A Review of the Eddyline Caribbean 12 Sit-On-Top Kayak: is it Really Worth the Hype?

This kayak is quite incredible at first glance. You can pretty much carry it all by yourself and it is sure to last you decades to come, but looks can be deceiving. You never know just what you are getting yourself into. This in depth review has got you covered.

Let’s get started.

A General Overview – What to Expect

If you are looking for a low key single person kayak, then this is the one for you. You can hoist this kayak on top of your car all by yourself with little to no hassle. The carbonlite plastic is that lightweight. Not only that, but it comes with UV resistance so you can store it outside. That is cool. You can keep it right down by the water and then paddle away.

The co-extruded ABS laminate looks good and adds a sleekness to the kayak you just cannot find anywhere else. It looks good. If you are worried how it will hold up to the turbulence you are bound to put it through, do not worry. The plastic is designed to withstand plenty of challenges.

On the side of the kayak you can find paddle holders. When you want to coast and take pictures of the stunning scenery you are bound to encounter, slip your paddle in and start snapping pictures.

Not only is this kayak long and sleek, perfect for speeding away on the water, it is also quite stable. Stand on top and jump into the waters below. It is difficult to tip it over. If you want to paddle and drink beer, this boat has a cup holder. You just have to make sure you keep it cold though.

Pros and Cons of this Puppy

Pros to Get You Excited

First and foremost this kayak is high quality. It is meant to last. You will be using it for decades to come. You can pass it along to your grand kids and they will be sure to enjoy it. As I said earlier, the UV resistance carbonlite plastic means you can let it sit in the suns when other kayaks will be just cooking from the heat. If you get too close to a rocky bottom and beat your boat up a little too much, it will be alright.

Another great part about this kayak is its weight. Compared to other’s of a similar size and length, this one blows them out of the water. When your friend who saved money but got the heavier one gases out from paddling all that extra weight around, you will be coasting along the water like a charm with plenty of room left in your tank.

Cons to Put a Slight Damper on Your Mood

By far the biggest downside is its price. As a recent university graduate, I know I cannot afford this kayak as much as I am interested in it. I need to save money and focus on myself for the time being. If price is a deal breaker, then this is not the one for you. You can find other kayaks that, while not as high quality, save your wallet a few punches.

Otherwise I can find no other downsides to this kayak. It has plenty of features that deserve a lot of praise and the quality means it will last for a long time.

My Personal Experience with this Kayak and a Helpful Video

I am going to be honest with you. I have not used this kayak before. You only have what I have written here to go off of. With that being said, I always strive to cover all my bases when writing product review articles like this one.

You might be thinking, ‘why the heck should I trust this guy? He hasn’t ridden this kayak before!’ You’re right. I haven’t paddled on this kayak before. At the same time though, you can rest assured I have done my research. I carefully comb reviews and get a holistic overview of what you can expect.

In the mean time, here is a helpful walk through video I found.

Customer Testimonials and Reviews

Fortunately for you though, I have found a lot of reviews online for you to read.

On REI’s website, the average rating is five stars, but only out of six reviews. That is hardly reassuring. At the same time though, you also need to consider the quality of the responses.

Chigui wrote a review on REI’s website. “I bought this kayak to replace an older kayak that I loved but was just too heavy to put on the car’s roof racks by myself and was therefore limiting my kayaking options. This kayak is very light and solved my problem, but I what I was not expecting was all the other advantages that came with it. It is so comfortable that I can paddle endlessly without the need of stopping to stretch, and it tracks beautifully.” They gave it five stars.

Dave, giving it five stars in a testimonial on REI’s website wrote, “my new Eddyline Caribbean 12 kayak is wonderful. Well engineered, efficiently designed and beautifully crafted. While a sit on top is by nature somewhat wider and has a higher center of gravity than a conventional kayak, it is very stable quite comfortable, tracks well and has space for everything. My wife has an Eddyline Skylark and it does paddle easier. Both a[re] great boats.”

REI is not the only place I found excellent testimonials. I found some for you to read on Eddyline’s site.

An anonymous user wrote on Eddyline’s site, “the 12-foot Caribbean was perfect for my needs. At 45 lbs, it easily beat out the most popular fishing kayaks that weigh in at 65 lbs and more. I can heft the Caribbean with one hand, if necessary. My Caribbean has two built-in rod holders, and side tracks for mounting other accessories…The Caribbean paddles great, provides a stable platform for fishing, and it’s pretty to boot!” They gave it 10 out of 10 stars.

Mike, a review on Eddyline’s site who gave it 9 out of 10 stars, wrote, “You get what you pay for. As a past reviewer said, there are cheaper boats out there, but what you are paying for is lighter weight. Eddyline’s Carbonlite 2000 can be 20 lbs lighter than a roto boat at 12′. It might not be any faster, but it take a lot less energy to push it through the water. You’ll still be paddling when your buddy paddling a roto poops out. It’s also a lot tougher when it come to oyster bars.”
