The calories you burn hiking depends on your weight, speed, incline, gender, backpack weight, age, height, diet history and composition, medications, genetics, time, body fat level, and current health status. Woah! That is a lot of factors. No one test will take all of these factors into account to deliver you completely accurate results down to the smallest calorie. It is too much. In short, individuals vary and the calculator I am sharing with you will give you a rough estimate.

Ways to Increase Your Calorie Count to Lose Weight

If you are trying to burn more calories, then there are a number of ways you can do more to lose more weight. There are three key methods you can implement right now: increase the weight, increase the time, increase the incline, and increase the speed. When you affect the factors, you affect the calories you burn.

Of all these options, you burn more calories when you increase the time. By a wide margin, it is your best asset to burn more calories. The next option is to increase the incline. You can really get a workout in when you go up a large hill. For increasing the weight, it helps a lot, but not like time and incline will. Lastly, you can increase the speed. It will burn more calories, but not to the extent that the other factors I list will. It just does not cut it compared to the other options you have available to you.

It helps to do your research from a wide variety of sources. The more you have to draw on, the more accurate you can be. With that being said, I use the following formula to calculate calories. It is very basic and simple to understand.

Calories Burned Hiking = MET (6.5 for hiking) x Weight (kg) x Time (hrs)

You might be wondering. What the heck is MET? I have never heard about it. Do not worry. I never heard of it either until I did the research for this article. MET is the metabolic equivalent or the amount of oxygen used for particular activities. For a sport like wrestling, you will use more oxygen than you would in walking. The faster you breathe, the more energy you consume.

For example, if my weight is 80 kilos and I spend 2 hours hiking, then I multiply with this formula: 6.5 x 80 kg x 2 hrs. That gives me a grand total of 1040 calories burned.
