Big Agnes Big House 4 Review – a Look at the Regular and the Deluxe

Sharing is caring!

There are a lot of tents out there that you can choose from. One of those is the Big House. It is a massive tent with plenty of space and versatility. In this article, I give you a Big Agnes Big House 4 review. I discuss its benefits and its drawbacks. Read on to find out all you need to know about this spectacular tent.

Big Agnes Big House 4 Tent

When it comes to the Big House tent, it comes in two types, regular and deluxe. The former is discussed first. Both have their benefits and drawbacks.
Specs

Fabric: polyester
Packed size: 7 x 23.5 inches
Pole Type: lightweight aluminum
Number of doors: 2
Number of poles: 3
Peak height: 60 inches

Pros

This tent comes with a number of benefits. Its greatest asset by far is its volume. There is a lot of room in it. Unlike a lot of tents, the big house 4 offers standing room, making it perfect for those who like to stand up when they change clothes. Also, it is designed for a big group. You can play cards with friends or fit a lot of people inside.

It is a durable tent, holding up well under the weather. In addition to its sturdiness, it is a well ventilated tent. It offers good mesh screens that let you air out your tent if need be. On top of that, this tent is easy to put up. A lot of tents are a hassle to work with, but not this one. Out of all other four person tent options, this one is near effortless to put up.

Cons

The biggest downside to this tent is its cost. It is expensive for a tent. If you are on a tight budget, then I would pursue an alternative. Another downside is how it is transported. It comes in a stuff sack. The better option would be a carrying case like that of the deluxe. On top of that, the instructions are a hassle to use.

Online Ratings

It averages 4.3 stars on REI’s website, telling you that people like the tent. From what I read of the reviews, they are positive. People enjoy having this tent with them.

Big Agnes Big House 4 Deluxe Tent

Specs

Color: Gold/White
Weight: 11lb 4oz
Floor Area: 90 x 96 inches, 60 sq ft
Fabric: polyester
Packed Size: 6 x 15 x 27 inches
Pole Type: lightweight aluminum
Number of doors: 2
Number of poles: 3
Peak Height: 68 inches
Price: $349.95

Pros

Unlike the regular, the deluxe big house comes with a welcome mat, a nice touch for this tent. Just like that of the one before it, the deluxe version is easy to set up and is big, but even more so with five extra square feet and eight extra inches of height. Those extra inches make a big difference as opposed to the regular. If you are 6 ft like me, then this is excellent for a tent.

On top of that, it offers inside pockets to store your gear and keep organized. For someone like me, knowing where everything is matters to me. In addition to that, unlike the regular big house 4, the deluxe comes in a brief case style carrying case. In short, it is the same as the regular but bigger, has pockets, a welcome mat, and a tote bag.

Cons

Unfortunately, with an increase of features comes an increase in price. If you are on a budget, then I would recommend choosing the regular big house 4. Otherwise, it is wonderful for tall people and people with large groups. On top of that, like the first tent, the instructions are a hassle to use.

Online Ratings

These stars, like the one before it, are from the REI website, giving it an average of 3.5 stars. However, this 3.5 is misleading. The person who gave the one star provided little explanation for their rating. Out of thirty-eight votes questioning the helpfulness of the review, thirty-one voted no. As such, it has more of a 4.3 average than a 3.5, making it a well rated tent.

Tent Extras

In addition to this tent, there are a number of extra items and attachments you can buy for it. These include a vestibule and a footprint. As with the tents, both come in a deluxe version of each.

Footprint

If there is one item I recommend before anything else, it is a footprint. They extend the floor life of your tent. If you want something less expensive or an alternative, then I recommend just buying a tarp at your local hardware store. They work just as well as this footprint, but with more versatility.

Vestibule

On top of the option to buy a footprint, you can also get a vestibule. In short, it is an outside tunnel to your main tent. If it is too hot outside, then you can sit in the shade of it. If you want gear outside and that gear to be protected from the weather, it allows you to do that. The vestibule gives you more flexibility.

Personally, I would encourage you to get a vestibule for this tent. It makes the tent even larger and gives you more options. You can do more than you would if you just had the tent.

The Big Agnes Brand

Before buying anything, you should be aware of the brand behind it. Knowing the brand helps you to make the right purchase. Launched in 2000, Big Agnes is based in Steamboat, Colorado. They have plenty of online reviews that you can find, averaging 4/5 stars on REI’s website. They call themselves the Mother of Comfort and that reflects in their gear. Big Agnes makes sure that their gear is enjoyable above all else. On top of that, this business is smaller than most other outdoor companies, but that lets them be more customer service oriented. Each of their products is named after a hiking, backpacking, or any outdoor trip they did in Colorado. Their goal is to make your experience as comfortable as possible and it is reflected in this product.

My Recommendation

The Big Agnes Big House 4 is a solid tent, providing plenty of room and versatility. No other four person tent on the market will offer this much height or area. If forced to decide between the regular and deluxe, I would choose the latter. It offers more benefits than the regular. It is well worth the money. If you are on a tighter budget, then go with the regular.

  1. Great post!

I haven’t been hiking in a couple years, but I want to get back into it and this tent seems like a great option. I usually like to go with a few friends, which brings me to my question: What is the max amount of people you think you can have in the deluxe tent?

Also, I like how the deluxe tent is nice and tall, because I hate being constricted to crawling around to move throughout the tent, and the extras with tent are a nice feature.

Lastly, I love how you reviewed the brand as well, because most reviewers skip over that part and I feel it is very important so that I can have more trust in the equipment that I am purchasing.

    Thanks,
    Jonathon

    1. Jonathon, it is great to hear that you want to get back into hiking and camping. The deluxe is a great choice for you. In general, it can fit four, but it will vary with the size of the people in the tent. It is, like you said, a great option for tall people and those who like extra features such as the pockets.

Thank you for the compliment on the brand review. It is important to know about the brand behind a product when making an expensive purchase like this one. I appreciate your thoughts and I hope you make it a great day!

  2. Great review of these tents! I love the option of the vestibule! That is something I will definitely look into getting. Do you know how many people max they will fit?
    Thanks!

    1. The vestibule is an excellent option. In answer to your question, the tent, in general, can fit four, but it will vary with the size of the people. Thank you for your question and I hope you make it a great day!

  3. The one issue that I have with most tents is the fact that I need to turn my head down to get around while standing up. It seems like I would not have that problem with the Big Agnes. Going to go for the Deluxe!

    1. Yes Nadia, that is a common issue for most tents. With the Big Agnes, this is not a problem. It is great to hear that you will go for the deluxe. Thank you for sharing and I hope you make it a great day!

  4. Hi,

I’m new to camping and never done it before. Good information on how to find a camping tent at a reasonable price. The deluxe one looks good one.

What do you suggest?? Any other alternative as I’m not much of a camper but want to buy one as we are going to camping in coming months. It’s just for 1or 2 time use. The tent will be used very rarely? Any suggestions would be helpful
    Thank you

    1. I would encourage you to consider this tent. Unlike other four person tents, it is spacious and easy to set up, excellent for those who will use it on occasion. Even though you would not be using it often, the tent has a long life span. It may be more expensive than most, but your future self will be thanking you for choosing this tent. Otherwise, thank you for sharing and good luck on your trip!

  5. Thanks for your honest and thoughtful review. I am looking for a tend, I am planning a trip to the beach, so a tent like these would be a great asset. I prefer to buy from small companies like this one, it´s easier to get support from them.

    1. Thank you for the comment Ruben. Tents like this one are always a great asset for the beach. It is even more so with brand behind it. With a small company like Big Agnes, there is less bureaucracy, so they can cater to your needs. I appreciate your thoughts on this article and I hope you make it a great day!

  6. Nice site about tents.
I have a large family that requires a very large tent. We have one nice large one and sometimes will put up another smaller one to store our food and other things out of the rain.
We do quite a lot of camping and sometimes hiking into the mountains. Can these tents be packing into a backpack?

    1. Bob, with the vestibule and tent, your family can rest easy and your food can be stored with no problem. It is nice to hear that you are an avid camper and hiker.

For the regular tent, it is stored in a flexible, fabric stuff bag, so it can fit in your backpack. For the deluxe though, it comes in a carrying case with two straps, so it can either be slung on your back as a pack or toted in your hand. Thank you for your question and I hope you make it a great day!

  7. Oh my… this has MY NAME written all over it, literally … HA! You have just introduced me to my favorite tent. Great post, thank you for sharing, it was both informative and flattering 😉
