The Best Men’s Lightweight Waterproof Hiking Boots of 2019

Sharing is caring!

So you are looking for the best of the best? You have come to the right article then. If you want to scale the summits of your backyard, then you will need to protect your feet. The hard, rocky road can take a toll on anyone’s hooves. Without further ado, I give you The Best Men’s Lightweight Waterproof Hiking Boots of 2019.

Be forewarned though. This article only talks about boots, not shoes. Shoes have a lower cut and are not designed for longer distances as boots are. In general, boots are heavier than shoes to handle more difficult terrain. If you want to find some shoes, then I suggest you find another article. I do plan to write an article on hiking shoes in the future however.

The vast majority of these hiking boots can also double as backpacking boots. You can use them on your backpacking trips. If a tool or piece of gear is multi-purpose, then that is always excellent. You can do much more. When in the outdoors, you want that purpose flexibility.

With all product review articles, I suggest you to keep this tab open and another one with a separate review. It will give you a holistic perspective and help you to narrow down your decision choices more readily.

For those who want women’s boots, you can be sure to find all the boots I list below in women’s models. You just take the title of any of the boots you like below and add ‘women’s’ to your Google search.

Let’s get started.

What Should You Look for in Your Hiking Boots?

Consider what type of activity you are going to be doing the most of. Hiking? Backpacking? Trail running? Each boot serves a particular purpose. No two are the same. If you spend most of your time backpacking, then you are going to want a heavier set boot. If you just hike, then a lighter one is in order. For trail runners, this is not the article for you unfortunately. You shouldn’t run in anything I list here.

You also need to consider comfort and fitting. Boots which feel hard and stiff to your feet are not going to get worn. While all new boots need to be broken, you shouldn’t have to worry about that on your fiftieth hike with them. You also need to consider the fit. Not all two pairs of feet are the same. My Dad’s feet are thick, wide, and long. Mine are long and slender (I take after my Mom in this regard :)). In short, you won’t wear a boot if it isn’t comfortable or doesn’t fit.

Weight matters. Heavy or heavy-feeling boots slow you down. A good pair will make you feel like a mountain goat, not a sluggish seal on the slopes.

Also consider the value. Is this boot worth the price you are paying for it? If an appropriate price increase comes along with a sufficient increase in quality, then it is worth your money. You might be on a budget. That is fine. Not all of us can drop a lot of money on a pair of boots.

I also encourage you to buy your footwear before any major trip to test out and get a feel for it. You do not want to be caught on your backpacking trip with foot blisters. When it comes to new boots in particular, you do not want to buy them the night before your 15-mile hike and then blaze the trail all day only to find halfway through the journey your feet are bleeding. Break them in over time.

Traction is essential. Mud happens. You do not want to be caught in quick sand.

If it ever rains where you go (and it will), your boots needs to be ready. Consider whether your boots are waterproof. As evident by the title, all the boots listed here are waterproof.

We all sweat. Some more than others, but you will definitely feel so on a hiking trip. Regardless of your level of perspiration, you need to have a level of breathability in a boot. I don’t know about you, but I can handle a certain amount of stink but not too much. Not all the ones listed here are equal in this regard.

Durability also matters. If the boots don’t last you a year, then they aren’t worthwhile. They need to handle the long haul. These boots listed here fit the bill in this respect.

Take ankle support into account. If you are older, then you need more support. If you are younger, then you can probably get away with a bit less. Some are higher than others. If you need more, then you might want to get a higher fit.

You will get plenty of arch support to keep you up and you won’t run into any trouble hiking through some mud. They will keep you dry and clean.

Vasque St. Elias GTX Hiking Boots

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 3 lbs 1 oz (1.4 kg)
Sole: rubber
Upper: leather
Waterproof: yes
Colors: slate brown/beluga

Why Should You Consider this One?

This is one of the best in class hiking boots you can get. For the price you pay, you are getting incredible value. Not many other boots compare. For high quality durability, fit, comfort, and stability, you get a boot built to last. You can walk over rugged terrain without any trouble. The thick rubber soles absorb any shock you might take, saving your knees and ankles in the process.

The biggest downside of these boots is their weight. At over 3 lbs, it is almost in the heavyweight division. If you can deal with this minor part of them, then you can expect these boots to be enjoyable for many years to come. If you are scrambling up some rocks, then you can find plenty of traction in these. With any leather product, you need to spray and maintain it to ensure its longevity. The thick rubber enables you to get all the grip you need. For any application where weight is not any issue, you can rely on these boots to serve you well.

For just about any trail condition, this boot will be there when you need it to be.

On REI’s website, this averages 3.9 stars out of over 225 reviews. I feel it is a bit of a disservice, but I digress. You can find plenty of thoughts and comments from a wide range of people to read through.

Vasque Talus Trek Mid UltraDry Hiking Boots

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 8 oz (1.13 kg)
Sole: vibram nuasi rubber
Upper: waterproof nubuck leather
Waterproof: yes
Colors: magnet/dry tobacco, slate brown/chili pepper

Why Should You Consider this One?

If you are looking for a time tested boot, then look no further. This one from Vasque has plenty of reviews to keep you reading for days on end. On REI’s website, you can find over 100 reviews averaging 4.5 stars. What makes this so special you might ask? It is not the most expensive boot on this list, so you will save quite a chunk of change if you are on a budget. While you will need to maintain the leather exterior, it sheds off water like nobody’s business.

No matter your excursion, your feet will be comfortable for the entire outdoor adventure. For the price and performance, you get solid value for what you pay. You can rely on this boot to serve you well for many years to come. One of the downsides is it is a bit heavier than most. From what I read of the customer reviews though, many suggested it was a non-issue for them. They did not notice the weight.

The toe-box is a bit tight, so I suggest you get fitted and sized to make sure everything fits nice and snug before diving in. The ventilation is a bit lacking, but that is the compromise you make for waterproof boots. To get a seal, these boots restrict air flow.

In short, it is a solid all around choice. For a fair price, you get an excellent boot. If you are hiking for a day or two, then you can expect these to deliver on your needs.

KEEN Men’s Targhee II Mid WP

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 5.9 oz (1.08 kg)
Sole: vulcanized rubber
Upper: nubuck leather
Waterproof: yes
Colors: black olive/yellow, raven/tortoise shell, shitake/brindle, beluga/junebug

Why Should You Consider this One?

This is the best ‘bang for your buck’ boot. You get incredible value for the price you pay. With well over 2,000 reviews on Amazon at an average of 4.3 stars, you can read testimonials of all shapes and sizes to keep you busy long through the night. If you are going on a backpacking trip or on a day hike, then this boot is the one for you. It handles just about any challenge you can throw at it. The traction is nothing to laugh at. You will be able to go through mud and slippery slopes no sweat.

It is a bit short at 3.75 inches, so you will run into trouble if you wade into water too deep. Stick to the shallows and you will be fine. The leather exterior still enables you to handle any moisture you encounter just fine. Another one of the downsides is its many seams. You will run into trouble if you really put this boot through the gauntlet.

If you have sensitive feet, do not fret. This is one of the most comfortable boots on the market today for the price you pay. It won’t feel like you are kicking back in a Jacuzzi but it will feel quite good. Even though the boot is leather, it breathes quite well because of the KEEN.DRY membrane. You will feel the air flow.

As a university student, I am seriously considering this boot because of the value. This is a more than fair bargain from Keens. If you do not have much to spend and want a pair which will last, this is the way to go.

Arc’teryx Bora2 Mid GTX

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 7.6 oz (1.120 kg)
Sole: [liner] Gore-Tex membrane (2-layer)
Upper: [shell] nubuck leather, [removable liner] stretch nylon, EVA foam
Waterproof: yes
Colors: gray denim/black

Why Should You Consider this One?

If you want great stability, traction, and foot protection, then this boot is the way to go. As with all products from Arc’teryx, this one is of high quality. The weight is not too bad weighing in at close to 2.5 lbs. This is one of the most rugged boots you can find on this list, handling the most treacherous terrain and holding its own in the most difficult weather. It handles like a charm. The vast majority of the others listed here cannot compete in this regard.

A lesser appreciate benefit of this boot is its style. If you have an eye for ascetics, then you should consider this boot. It is sleek and only comes in black like a model T.

This boot has two key downsides though. It is, first off, expensive. I do not plan on getting this boot anytime soon for just that reason alone. It is too much for my tiny wallet to handle. Second, it lacks breathability. If your feet plan to get sweaty and stinky anytime soon, then you better be ready to sit in the sweat until you make it back home. Be sure to wear wool or breathable socks. You cannot rely on Arc’teryx in this regard.

I did not find too many reviews online (probably because of the price), but I did stumble upon some from Google shopping. This boot averages 3.8 stars but out of not even 20 reviews, hardly a fair shake if you ask me. It is, however, one of the best boots you can buy if you are willing to spend the extra money. The choice is yours.

Asolo Falcon GV

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 7.7 oz (1.12 kg)
Sole: mega grip compound
Upper: suede leather and cordura
Waterproof: yes
Colors: graphite/black, donkey/graphite, graphite/blueberry

Why Should You Consider this One?

If you are ever crossing a stream, you will not run into any problems with leakage. This boot will keep your feet dry. Even though the exterior is not leather but a suede and nylon mixture, you will be surprised at how well these boots hold up. It stands the tests and rigors you are bound to encounter on the trail. The stability prevents you from rolling your ankles. You also get quite a bit of traction holding up to even the most treacherous terrain.

Most brands with high ankle support come with an increase in weight. Not so with this one, if you want high ankle support without all the weight, then this is the way to go at almost six inches off the ground. The lightweight materials enable you to get all the benefits of a heavier boot without all the excess weight. You will feel like you have angel’s wings on your feet.

If you want lots of ankle support, then this boot is the way to go. You can expect to have plenty of strength to make it up the steep inclines of Patagonia no sweat. One of the biggest downsides to this boot is its price. Compared to what you get and the price you pay, there is a disconnect. Others on the market have a lower price and better performance.

On Google shopping, I found this boot to have 25 reviews averaging 4.8 stars. While it is not the highest number of testimonials, the average star rating is reassuring. There are enough people who have bought and tried out this boot to warrant serious consideration.

La Sportiva Nucleo High GTX WP

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 1.6 oz (952.5 g)
Sole: vibram nano rubber
Upper: nubuck leather
Waterproof: yes
Colors: chocolate/avocado, taupe/brick

Why Should You Consider this One?

In 2017, this boot won the ‘Gear of the Year’ award from Outside Magazine. If you are looking for a solid all-around boot, then this is the way to go. It is a medium duty boot. It won’t be handling the craziest of conditions, but it will handle the vast majority of what you can expect to encounter.

On REI’s website, this boot averages 4.3 stars at close to 100 reviews. You can read through a lot of different testimonials of all shapes and sizes. One of the best parts about this boot is its aggressive tracts. You can handle snow, sleet, mud, and slippery slopes no problem. There is a high level of traction. La Sportiva is known for climbing shoes and boots. These are no different. They designed these boots with the intention of some level of climbing. While you won’t be heading up a straight vertical, expect to handle a high level of incline.

One of the downsides is that it is not meant for hot weather. You will sit in your sweat if you spend too much time in the sun with this pair. Another issue is its low profile. You can go through streams but none which are too deep. It is a slight drawback but it is otherwise waterproof. If you are on the heavier side at 250 lbs above, please note you will feel the tread shift underneath.

Overall though, it is a solid boot at a fair price. You get high quality value out of this one.

Lowa Renegade GTX Mid

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 7 oz (1.106 kg)
Sole: vibram rubber
Upper: nubuck leather/cordura nylon
Waterproof: yes
Colors: beige, black, dark gray/navy, espresso/honey, sepia, stone/espresso

Why Should You Consider this One?

This is one of the best boots out there for stability. You will be able to keep your balance even when you are heading up the hill. With the high ankle collar, you get plenty of support and, surprisingly enough, excellent comfort. The traction is nothing to scoff at either. You can handle slippery slopes, wet waters, and torrid trails well. If you are heading up a scree on a steep incline, do not fret. You can expect to hold your own.

One of its downsides is the lacing system. The laces have a tendency to pop. You should replace them with larger laces if you want to prevent this tendency. It also is a bit expensive, one of the more expensive models listed here in fact, so it detracts from the value you get out of it. Because many enjoy the fit and comfort, some are willing to pay the price.

No matter the water you step into, your feet will stay dry. The patented gore tex liner enables you to keep your feet moistureless and dry as bone. (You should still wear socks though.) It also comes with a high ankle line at 6 inches. You can expect to wade through waters relatively deep and turn out just fine. If you are worried about longevity, don’t be. The limited number of seams and regular leather treatment you will be doing will enable you to enjoy this boot for years to come.

Besides the lacing system and price, this is another solid boot.

Scarpa Zodiac Plus GTX

Specs at a Glance

Weight: 2 lbs 6.4 oz (1.088 kg)
Sole: vibram dumlin rubber
Upper: suede leather
Waterproof: yes
Colors: shark/orange

Why Should You Consider this One?

This is in the top three of best boots you can get. It performs well overall in traction, stability, weight, and scrambling. Compared to most of the others on this list, it breathes well. When it comes to traction, it cannot be beat. It just sticks to slippery terrain. Well maybe not ‘sticks’ literally, but you get the metaphor. The water proofing is one of the best in the business at keeping your feet dry.

It does have some drawbacks though. One of them is it only comes in one color. I do, however, feel it is quite stylish though. If you have narrower feet, it may feel loose to you because of its wider fit. It does not have the best lacing system, but this is minor. Another issue is its price. Oh boy is this one expensive! It is close to almost three ‘Benjamins’ in price. If you have to dough to spend and bake with, then this is the one for you. For me though, I won’t be dropping that kind of cash.

On REI’s website, it averages 3.8 stars out of 17 reviews. On Google shopping, it averages 4 stars out of 20 reviews. Do not let that dissuade you though. It is not too much and the limited number of testimonials do not give you the full picture of what is in store for you.

Overall, though it comes in at a high price, this boot will last you for many years to come. It is durable, steady, and versatile.
